When niche site builders spy on competitors and snatch their keywords, they suddenly realize they’re literally pirates of digital marketing realm.
The idea
You have a niche site. Sometimes you wonder if your niche site is missing any keywords, if there are any easy keywords that your competitors are ranking for on SERP, but you are overlooking them?
If you have ever wondered like that, then welcome to this keyword guide.
The requirements
This method requires:
- Ahrefs
The official Ahrefs subscription is very expensive, thus I always use this cheap Ahrefs group buy for doing keyword research. You may want to give it a try.
The instruction
Assuming you have a niche site about headphones, and now you are searching for easy and relevant keywords related to headphones (we will call headphones the seed keyword).
First, go to Ahrefs, open Keyword Explorer, put in seed keyword (headphone), then click on the Search icon, after that click on the tab All keyword ideas on your left side panel.
Second, set the filters as below:
- KD: 0-0 (this filter helps you find out very low competition keywords)
- Volume: 500-Max (you want keywords with at least 500 traffic monthly)
- Include: best (you want to target “best X” keywords because those have the highest conversion rate)
- Exclude: buy (because you don’t want bestbuy.com appear in the report)
After that, click on Show results, this is what it showed:
As you can see, there are many keywords related to headphones with very low competition levels (KD 0). However, refrain from using these keywords. Our goal is to identify low authority websites.
Third, now click on the SERP button of the second keyword to see which websites are ranking for this term. See the image below:
As you can see, there are quite a few low authority websites ranking for this keyword (low AR, low DR websites).
After all the steps above, what do you harvest? A list of low authority websites that still rank for certain keywords. This indicates that those keywords are very easy.
Now, copy those domains into Notepad and save them.
Finally, go to Ahrefs, click on Site Explorer, and enter each domain from your Notepad one by one, the purpose is to check their keywords . Don’t forget to set it to “domain with all its subdomains”. For example:
Look at the left side panel, you may want to check the Organic keywords and the Top pages tab. For example, let’s see the Top pages of this website:
Clearly, too many easy keywords that a even a low authority website can rank for.
So, the next thing you should do is go back to your niche site, write a high-quality article based on those keywords, do superior on-page SEO, may be build a few backlinks for that post, insert affiliate links or ads, and make money. Rinse and repeat. Eventually, your niche site will rank for all the easy keywords that competitors are ranking for.
